Key sector - energy

The Humber has established a merited reputation as the UK’s Energy Estuary and the East Riding plays an important role in this sector from the huge gas storage caverns at Aldbrough and Hornsea to the Langeled Pipeline that runs 725 miles under the North Sea from Norway to the Easington Gas Terminal, which between them store and land approximately 30% of the UK’s gas requirements.

The emergence of offshore wind as an important part of the national energy supply mix has presented further opportunities for the local economy with three of the world’s largest wind farms located near to the East Riding Coast.

These massive engineering projects are attracting between £75 -£100 billion in investment and the East Riding has sought to establish supporting infrastructure such as ergo and the Aura Innovation Centre at Bridgehead Business Park to ensure, in conjunction with projects such The Supply Chain Network, as much of the added value activity is captured locally.
